Abstract

Objectives : This study was designed to identify the subjective characteristics and patterns of the ordinary people¢¥s attitudes towards the mental retarded children.

Methods : Q-methodology was used as the research design, while the research procedures were as follows; Q-sampling has been derived from the literature reviews and interviews. Its credibility and validity were also tested by nursing and methodology professors. A total of 34 statements were selected. After executing P-sampling, 60 samples were selected. Based on a 9 point scale, the selected respondents rated their operant definition on the mentally retarded children. The results of the above procedures were analyzed by the PCQ program.

Results : The results revealed that there were four types of attitudes towards the mental retarded children. The four types were as follows; 1) The first type was named as the "Equal-rights" type. 32 subjects showed this type of attitude. 2) The second type was named as the "Indifferent" type. 6 subjects showed this type of attitude. 3) The third type was named as the "Insufficient-knowledge" type. 5 subjects showed this type of attitude. 4) The forth type was named as the "Cliquish and Prejudiced" type. 2 subjects showed this type of attitude.

Conclusions : This study suggested four types of attitudes towards the mentally retarded children. By identifying the nature of each type, this study can be useful in developing efficient strategies to improve the social understanding and attitudes towards the mentally retarded children.
